About Programme

Family and Consumer Sciences Department was established under the title of Home Management and Family Economics in 1968, as part of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Home Economics School. In line with similar programs in the world, the department's name was changed as Home Economics in 1999, and as Family and Consumer Sciences in 2005, and it was attached to Hacettepe University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences in 2006.



The mission of Family and Consumer Sciences Department is to:




  • raise well-qualified individuals who know how to manage and develop individuals' and families' human and material resources and find out solutions to related problems,

  • who contribute to resource planning, control, evaluation and efficiency in order to assist institutions to reach their aims,

  • who enlighten the consumers about rational consumer behaviors, problems and solutions, inform the producers about consumer preferences,



and present the products of education and services to the good of the society with the ultimate aim of helping individuals, families, institutions and thus society in order to reach a universally desired life quality through its qualified faculty members who are equipped with high level knowledge and skills.



In accordance with this mission, Family and Consumer Sciences Department undergraduate program has been renewed within the scope of Bologna process. In this renewal process, past and present students', shareholders' and non-governmental organizations' views were taken into consideration and a needs analysis was conducted. The program requirements were formed and the program was renewed on the basis of this needs analysis.

Qualification Awarded
Graduates who have completed all of the program requirements with success are awarded the undergraduate diploma in "Family and Consumer Sciences". Graduates of the department earn the title "Family and Consumer Economist".
Admission Requirements
The Family and Consumer Sciences Undergraduate Program provides vocational education to graduates of high school and equivalent vocational high schools on the basis of EA scores of the Undergraduate Placement Exam. The medium of instruction is Turkish. English preparatory class is optional.
Higher Grade Transition
Candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate education can study in master and phd programs, provided that they have taken one of the exams determined by the YÖK and received the minimum scores stipulated by the "Hacettepe University Senate".
Graduation Requirements
Students who meet the "Degree Requirements and Regulations" have the right to graduate from the department.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The main aim of the Family and Consumer Economist is to make life conditions healthier, safer and more satisfactory by considering the individual's, families', institutions', that is, the society's physical, economic, and psycho-social needs and provide research, planning, consultation and education services.Graduates of the Family and Consumer Sciences Undergraduate Program may serve in the fields of family life education, consumer education and protection, physical environment and management and at various public and private institutions which aim to increase individuals' and families' life quality, deliver adult education, form a healthy and efficient environment, carry out studies for the purpose of protecting and educating the consumer actively.
Assessment and Grading
Exams, assessment and grading are carried out in accordance with the "Hacettepe Üniversitesi Önlisans, Lisans Eğitim-Öğretim ve Sınav Yönetmeliği".
