Department of Social Work


History
As a scientific discipline and profession, social work examines various relations between people and their surroundings. The purpose of social work is to enable every individual to realize their true potential, enrich their lives and prevent functional problems. The profession of social work is focused on problem solving and bringing change. In connection to this, social workers are the representatives of action and change for the individuals, families and communities that they serve in society. Social work is a system of interrelated sets of values, theories and practices. Social work values are the profession`s national and international sets of moral codes.Social work takes existing obstacles, inequalities and injustices to its focus. It tries to bring answers to crises and emergency issues as much as daily personal and social problems. Social work utilizes many abilities, techniques and activities in line with its holistic focus on people and their surroundings. Social work interventions span from individual focused psychosocial processes to inclusion in to social policy, planning and development. These include counselling, clinical social work, group studies, social/pedagogical studies, family therapies besides supporting people in terms of utilizing social resources and services. İnterventions also include the agencies` aims, social organization, social policy and engaging in social and political action. Social work`s holistic focus is universal but priorities of social work practice may vary according to cultural, historical and socio-economic conditions of any given country in any given time.In the Bachelor`s program, there are practice and theory courses. Theoretical courses are given via modern techniques like conference, group discussion, role playing and case analysis. In the practice courses the aim is to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice and gain necessary professional skills and behaviors. Practice courses aim at ensuring the students to gain the skills to use social work techniques like working with individuals, group practices, community practices and social work administration at various social work organizations and agencies in and out of Ankara besides the ones abroad under the supervision of an academic supervisor. Bachelor`s thesis course is also executed under the supervision of academic advisors to reach the aim of increasing students` experiences in terms of producing scientific knowledge about social problems and social services.

Admission Requirements
The students must have completed Turkish secondary education or the equivalent abroad. Students` placements are carried out according to the results of the national student placement examination (LYS) results.

Graduation Requirements
Students:1. Must complete 240 ECTS equivalent of courses (25% elective courses) successfully. Both local and ECTS conditions must be met.2. Must complete all compulsory courses successfully (126 local credits, 180 ECTS).3. Must complete 30 local credits and 60 ECTS equivalent elective courses successfully. In the light of the fact the students must take minimum of 30 ECTS in one semester:a. One course from the elective list of the 2nd semester (2 local credits, 4 ECTS)b. Two courses from the elective list of the 4th semester (4 local credits, 8 ECTS)c. Four courses from the elective list of the 5th semester (8 local credits, 16 ECTS)d. Four courses from the elective list of the 6th semester (8 local credits, 16 ECTS)e. Four courses from the elective list of the 7th semester (8 local credits, 16 ECTS) must be taken by the student which is equal to 15 elective courses.4. Maximum of 12 ECTS can be taken from elective courses from other departments5. In each academic year the student must have taken a minimum of 60 ECTS credits including compulsory and elective courses.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Graduates work in the fields of health, judicial services and criminal justice, family-children-women-disabled-young-aged welfare, social assistance, immigration, social policy, special education and higher education.
