Welcome to the Department of American Culture and Literature



Established in 1982, the Department of American Culture and Literature of Hacettepe University was the first deparment of American Studies in Turkey. The courses offered in the Department focus on the cultural, literary, historical, intellectual, social, artistic and political aspects of the USA and how these have developed through the history until the present. The objective of the Department is to follow an interdisciplinary approach in order to make the students develop a critical insight into various literary and cultural products.

History
Welcome to our Department, officially recognized as Turkey's best department for research in American Culture & Literature. Alongside staff with expertise in many areas ranging from Gender Studies to Visual Arts, from Literary Theory to Film Studies, from Environmental Literature to Ethnic Studies, from Translation to Life Writing, we offer an impressive record of student achievement and a very active student life.

Established in 1982, the Department of American Culture and Literature of Hacettepe University was the first deparment of American Studies in Turkey. Since the deparment was first founded, it has offered undergraduate and graduate (M.A. and Ph.D.) degrees with the contribution of Turkish and foreign scholars. The courses offered in the department define and analyze the development of American literary and cultural traditions and examine the multicultural structure of American society in all its diversity and depth. The courses in the program focus on the cultural, literary, historical, intellectual, social, artistic and political aspects of the USA and how these ideas have developed from the inception of American culture and literature to the present. The objective of the department's interdisciplinary and intercultural approach is to enable students to develop a critical insight into various literary and cultural traditions.

Admission Requirements
In order to be admitted to the Department of American Culture and Literature, the student is required to have completed the Turkish secondary education (or an equivalent education abroad) and to have obtained sufficient grades from the national university exam. Students are required to enter exams organized by OSYM, to fill out the required forms and to enter the required listing from a sufficient number. The placement of the student in the department is carried out by OSYM as a result of the central placement system. For detailed information, consult the OSYM website (http://www.osym.gov.tr).

Students admited to the Department of American Culture and Literature are required to take the English exam to be exempt from the preparatory year. Students who pass this exam start their undergraduate education in the department while the others start their one-year English preparation education.

Students of foreign nationalities are accepted to the program under the requirements of the Hacettepe University Senate.

Graduation Requirements
To be able to earn a bachelor's degree in American Culture and Literature, students need to take 240 ECTS credits and have a minimum GPA of 2,00 out of 4,00.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Career opportunities for the graduates of the Department of American Culture and Literature are quite diverse. While some of our graduates work as research assistants in related departments of universities, others work at ministries such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Undersecretariat of Foreign Trade, at organizations such as State Planning and Central Intelligence, at national and international institutions and companies, at visual and print media institutions, at translation agencies, at publishing houses and news agencies. Moreover, our graduates are also employed at various institutions related to the European Union.
Assessment and Grading
Assessment and grading criteria (mid-terms, homework, final exams, etc.) and examination regulations for each course and their percentages are defined under the title of “Assessment Methods” in the Course Information Pack of the program. Final exams are carried out on certain dates determined by the university, at certain times and places announced by the department. Students' final semester grades are determined by the instructor and are based on students' mid-term and final grades, their work during the term and their attendance record.

In determining the final grades and setting up exams, the relevant articles of Hacettepe University's Rules and Regulations for Undergraduate Education and Testing are implemented.
