About Programme

Department of Nutrition and Dietetics` Bachelor`s degree consists of 4 years (One year English prep class is depend on students` demand).   The first stage of the programme includes basic medical sciences as well as nutritional sciences underlying the practice of nutrition and dietetics. Courses in the second stage are directly related to the practice. In addition to theoretical courses and laboratory studies, students carry out practical work in the field for community health and nutrition, and in hospitals for therapeutic nutrition and food service systems in institutions. Through these integrated sequential courses of study, the students develop an understanding of principles, concepts and the skills necessary for profession of nutrition and dietetics as a nutritionist and dietitian.

History
Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is the first school in Turkey that provides professional training programme at university level in this field. Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was established for the first time in 1962 as Dietetics program within the structure of School of Health Sciences in order to provide education and do research in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. When Hacettepe School of Health Sciences was converted into Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in 1963, the programme of Dietetics was restructured and became a department affiliated to the School of Basic Health Sciences of the faculty. After establishment of Hacettepe University in April 8, 1967, it started to provide service within the structure of Faculty of Health Sciences. The department, a part of the School of Home Economics for a while, was separated in 1976 and affiliated to School of Health Technologies together with the Department of Food Analysis and Technologies. After the affiliation of Department of Food Analysis and Technologies to the Faculty of Engineering in 1977, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics started to continue its implementations and researches as the only unit of School of Health Technologies, by means of graduate and post-graduate education and training programmes. Programmes of Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, and Institutional Food Service Systems were founded within the structure of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in 1994; and in 2001 Community Nutrition Programme was established. In 2007, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was affiliated to the Faculty of Health Sciences founded with the resolution published in Official Gazette no. 26551. The department, started to give graduates in 1966 for the first time, has educated 3014 dieticians until today. Every year 85 graduates are added to this number.

Admission Requirements
Students who are graduated of high school and/or equivalent vocational schools, and having necessary score (science based) from the National University Attendance Exam are accepted to the Nutrition and Dietetics Bachelor's program. Language(s) of instruction/examination is Turkish, there is one elective year for English language preparatory, and there are also elective courses in English.

Students who meet the conditions in section "Requirements and Regulations of theDegree Awarded" entitled to graduate.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates can work as researcher, educator, treatment and rehabilitation provider at patient treatment institutions, care centers for children and elderly, private diet clinics as well as academician. Moreover, the graduates can work as manager, researcher and educator in other institutional food services, private or public institutions related to nutrition. The graduates of this programme can be appointed as dietician to the mentioned public institutions if they get the required point from KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination). The graduates can be a member of the Turkish Dietetic Association, which was established in 1969. The Turkish Dietetic Association is a member of European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) and International Committee of Dietetic Association (ICDA).

Examination regulations, assesments and grading is performed according to 'Hacettepe University Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations'. Details of the measurement and evaluation for each course are explained in the section 'Course information'.
