General Information about Program

Department of English Linguistics was founded in 1972 as an evening program of English Language and Literature Department in the Faculty of Social and Administrative Sciences. Following a restructuring process carried out by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the program gained the status of major field of study in 1982 as a part of Western Languages and Literatures Department. In 1994, English Linguistics became the first linguistics department in Turkey, contributing to the acknowledgement and recognition of the discipline in Turkey as a field of social sciences due to its efforts to bring in a scientific perspective in studying language and educate students at undergraduate and graduate levels. An important distinguishing feature of the Department of English Linguistics is that it bridges the micro fields of linguistics such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics with other disciplines like psychology, sociology and philosophy to attain a macro perspective in studying language, and thus, provide a multi-faceted language education for the students. The medium of instruction in the department is 100% English.
