Department of Turkish Language and Literature


History
Department of Turkish Language and Literature of Hacettepe University was established in 1969 by Prof.Dr. Şükrü Elçin. From 1969 to 1974 it has offered only Ph.D. degrees on Turkish language and Turkish literature. Since 1975 it has offered undergraduate and graduate (M.A. and Ph.D.) degrees. Department of Turkish Language and Literature is a four year formal education program under Faculty of Letters. Language of instruction is Turkish (accept obligatory foreign language lessons).The objective of the department`s interdisciplinary and intercultural approach is to enable students to develop a critical insight into various literary and cultural traditions. The courses offered in the department define and analyze the development of Turkish literary and cultural traditions and examine the historical development of of Turkish language and literature all its diversity and depth. The courses in the program focus on the cultural, literary, historical, intellectual, social, artistic and political aspects of the Turkish language and literature and how these ideas have developed from the inception of Turkish culture and literature to the present. One of the goals of our department is to educate teachers, experts and scientists in the field of Turkish language and literature.

Admission Requirements
In order to be admitted to the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, the student is required to have completed the Turkish secondary education (or an equivalent education abroad) and to have obtained sufficient grades from the national university exam. Students are required to enter exams organized by ÖSYM, to fill out the required forms and to enter the required listing from a sufficient number. The placement of the student in the department is carried out by ÖSYM as a result of the central placement system. For detailed information, consult the ÖSYM website (http://www.osym.gov.tr). Students of foreign nationalities are accepted to the program under the requirements of the Hacettepe University Senate.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the program, students are required to complete the following requirements:Have taken all the courses determined in their program and passed them, acquiring a minimum of 240 ECTS credits,Have a minimum GPA of 2.00 out of 4.00 by the end of their undergraduate courses.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Career opportunities for the graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature are quite diverse. While some of our graduates work as teachers and lecturers or research assistants in related departments of private and state universities, others work at ministries, at national and international institutions and companies, at visual and print media institutions, at publishing houses and news agencies.
Assessment and Grading
Assessment and grading criteria (mid-terms, homework, final exams, etc.) and examination regulations for each course and their percentages are defined under the title of “Assessment Methods” in the Course Information Pack of the program. Final exams are carried out on certain dates determined by the university, at certain times and places announced by the department. Students' final semester grades are determined by the instructor and are based on students' mid-term and final grades, their work during the term and their attendance record.

In determining the final grades and setting up exams, the relevant articles of Hacettepe University's Rules and Regulations for Undergraduate Education and Testing are implemented.
