History
Since its establishment in 1964, Hacettepe University`s Department of Sociology has become a leading centre to sociologic education and sociologic research in Turkey. Since the beginning, an interdisciplinary approach has been adopted both in education and in research and has become an example to future establishments of other sociology departments in Turkey. Students are prepared to their professional lives through courses based on theory and application both in undergraduate and graduate studies.Education programs carried out by the department are as follows: Sociology Undergraduate, Sociology Graduate, Sociology Doctorate, and Women Studies Graduate Programs. Courses that need application such as data analysis are carried out in laboratories and this provides an advantage to our alumni. The medium of instruction is Turkish.

Admission Requirements
Those who would like to study as an undergraduate should have successfully graduated from a high school or an equivalent and should have obtained a sufficient score in the necessary field Undergraduate Placement Exam.

Graduation Requirements
Students that complete 240 ECTS in total from joint compulsory, compulsory, and elective courses with an average academic score of 2.00 out of 4.00, have the right to graduate. Among the department courses is also a training course, which is of six ECTS, is an elective course open to students who would like to prepare themselves for their professional lives. Details for this matter are provided under the "Program Structure". For graduation, related items are applied according to Hacettepe University`s Regulations on Undergraduate Education and Examination. Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Sociologists have a wide choice of employment; they can work in technical services or in different positions of public or private institutions and organizations with a sociologist title. Sociologists can also work in the following institutions: The ministries` central organizations, Ministry of Family and Social Politics, Provincial Directorates of Agriculture, General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, General Directorate of Civil Archives, Housing Development Administration of Turkey, General Directorate of Civil Defence, Secretariat of Atatürk Research and Education Centre, General Directorate of Security Affairs, General Directorate of Press and Information, General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs, South-eastern Anatolia Project Regional Development Administration, Turkish Social Services and Child Protection Institution, Radio and Television Supreme Council, Turkey Statistics Institute, State Planning Organization, Presidency of Religious Affairs, municipalities, chambers of commerce and industry, nursing homes for older people, printed-visual media outlets, research companies, advertisement agencies, publishers, banks, human resources of private companies, and international organizations (such as UN, ILO, EU).

For each course, assessment and grading techniques have been defined in the “Course Plan” within the Information Set prepared by the related lecturer(s). Related items of Hacettepe University’s Regulations on Undergraduate Education and Examination are applied for the examinations and grading.
