About Programme

The Department of German Language and Literature commenced its undergraduate and postgraduate activities during the academic year 1966/1967. The department's objective is to conduct research within the frameworks of linguistics and literary studies, focusing on the languages, literatures, and cultures of German-speaking countries. Additionally, the department seeks to enhance German language teaching methods and educate experts in these fields, thus meeting the demand for qualified professionals in both academic and practical domains within our country. Another aim of the department is to foster mutual understanding among societies by investigating the linguistic and cultural characteristics of Turkish and German-speaking countries, thus generating solutions that facilitate better comprehension between these communities.

Education is delivered in accordance with contemporary educational principles in classes of 30-40 students. A departmental library comprising five thousand books relevant to the field is available for student use. Graduates have opportunities to serve in various official institutions and private organizations, primarily including the Ministries of Tourism, Culture, and Foreign Affairs. They can also pursue careers in sectors such as banking, media, foreign trade, and tourism. Our graduates, with proficiency in German or in other fields related to Germany, can engage in university-level teaching of German, and those holding teaching certificates can teach in both public and private schools. The medium of instruction in the department is German. Students who do not pass the proficiency exam are required to complete a one-year preparatory program. The Department offers Master's and Doctoral programs in the branches of German Language and German Literature.
