About Programme

Department of Geological Engineering

History
In 1968, undergraduate education was started as a five-year program, it extended to a six-year program in 1969. The six-year program was continued until the department connected to Faculty of Engineering according to new regulations in universities in 1973. During this period, diplomas were given with Master of Science and Geological Engineering (Mining) titles. In 1997, four-year undergraduate education program was started. At the start, because of the educational applications for mineral research and evaluation, the (Mining) and Hydrogeology words in diplomas of Geological Engineering (Hydrogeology) were taken out according to the new regulations implemented in education program in 1997. In the following years, graduation was stated as "Geological Engineering Program" and "Hydrogeological Engineering Program".Education in English in ratio of 1/3, which was started in 1983, was given up in 2006 and education in Turkish has been implemented. From the beginning of the education in 1968 to 2009, our students required to attend foreign language preparation class. Foreign language preparation class for one year is still ongoing as elective.Department of Geological Engineering with its extensive laboratory facilities such as X-RF, X-RD, Water Chemistry, Environmental Tritium, LA ICP-MS, Stable Isotope, Microscope, Thin section-polishing, Mineral microanalysis, Crushing-grinding and separation of clay, Paleontology, Geohydrology, Groundwater monitoring, Geographic Information System, Mobilized Areal Research-GeoProbe, Technology and petrography of coal, rock and soil mechanics, has modern education and research infrastructure.Geological Engineering Program consists of balanced distribution of basic engineering courses and basic vocational courses. The courses in the education program are being consistently updated by taking contemporary developments in engineering application areas into account. In order for students to have interdisciplinary skills and to train themselves in their special interests, great weight has been given to non-technical and technical elective courses. Besides, as a requirement of modern engineering education, courses in business-economics and social sciences constitute an important part of the training program. The flexible education program allows student to complete shorter than 4-years education. In addition, successful students are given the opportunity to continue their training for one semester in the relevant departments of well-known European universities.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates
An important part of our graduates works in public institutions like TPAO, DSI, Provincial Bank, MTA, General Directorate of Highways, EPDK, Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Forest and Hydraulic Works, Municipalities, etc. and in national and international organizations working in the private sector in various scales. Our graduates, who want to continue their career in academia, are easily accepted by domestic and foreign universities.
Assessment and Grading
H.U. Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations are applied (http://www.oid.hacettepe.edu.tr) for exams and course grades. Success in a course is determined by the course grade. The course success grade is obtained by evaluating the success of the student during the semester (midterm exams, homework, practical studies, etc.) and the general exam together. The effect of the general exam on the course success grade can be at least 40% and at most 60%. At the beginning of the semester, the responsible lecturer of the course announces to the students the effects of the semester success and the general exam on the course success grade, and the course implementation plan with the minimum grade required to be taken in the general exam for the student to be considered successful. A student who does not take the general exam is considered unsuccessful in that course.
