Hacettepe University, Chemistry Department trains chemists who can solve scientific and technological problems independently under modern conditions in the advanced technological level of basic and applied research.

Students gain the skills of understand and comprehend the structure, composition, properties and changes in the natural and artificial materials. Basic courses in the department provides students a broad perspective.

To receive undergraduate diploma, students have to complete 240 AKTS courses. Students of Chemistry Department may receive a side branch certificate from Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering Department.

History
Department of Chemistry was founded as a part of Ankara University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1964. Chemistry and Chemical Engineering programs were begun at the same time. Then our department was exceeded to Faculty of Science and Engineering in 1967 when Hacettepe University was founded as an autonomous university. Faculty of Science and Engineering was divided into three parts which were Science, Engineering and Chemistry in 1971, and then Chemical Engineering Department was founded as a part of Faculty of Chemistry at the same year. Faculty of Chemistry and Faculty of Engineering were joined together in 1983 then Department of Chemistry was exceeded to Faculty of Engineering. In 1992, our department was exceeded to Faculty of Science. There are seven different major fields of study at Department of Chemistry: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Theoretical Chemistry. Department of Chemistry continues the educational and research activities with 40 faculty members. In our department, there are eight student laboratories, 40 research laboratories, the central research laboratory and a computer laboratory.Chemistry Department teaches basic and advanced chemistry especially students of Faculty of Science and to many students coming from departments which are involved in Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health Science and Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. Chemistry education comprises a total of 4 years and the language of education is Turkish. After 3rd year, chemistry students have to complete their 45-working-day-internship. The students who complete the whole education program receive their Bachelor of Science in chemistry degree and they can work as "chemist". The mission of the Department of Chemistry (through recognized worldwide leader and award-winning scientists, equipped research laboratories, projects supported by nationally and internationally, and students who are curious about science with broad vision) is to train scientist who are competent in chemistry in the world, and is to be science slot who are mainly recognized by researches, scientific publications and conferences in the world.Basic courses in the department provide students a broad perspective. The students must complete all courses successfully for a total of 240 ECTS. Chemistry department students can get minor program certificates from Chemical Engineering and Food Engineering Departments. Our students can benefit from research facilities and can involve in international exchange programs during their chemistry education so that they may continue their education abroad. Most of the students who graduated from Department of Chemistry continue higher education programs in their own department and/or also other national and international programs. Our undergraduate, graduate and PhD graduates can easily be employed by using relations with academic and industrial fields.
