Topluma ve bilim dünyasına bilimin temel ilkelerini benimsemiş, dünyaya keşfetmek için bakan, yaratıcı, evrensel bilimin geliştirilmesine katkıda bulunan, değer üreten, etik değerlere bağlı, farklılıklara saygı gösteren nitelikli biyologlar yetiştirmeyi ve çağın gereklerine uygun araştırma olanaklarını kullanarak, bilginin yaratılmasını, yayılmasını ve uygulanmasını görev edinmiştir.

History
The Department of Biology which was founded in 1967 was later reorganised in 1982 to embrace eight divisions. The aim of the Department is to encourage scientific thinking and to provide the students with the necessary up to date theoretical knowledge and practice in the field. The divisions of the Department are: Applied Biology, Biotechnology, Botany, Ecology, General Biology, Hydrobiology, Molecular Biology and Zoology.The Department is rich in laboratories related to all the fields of study. Applied Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Zoology, Ecology and Botany Laboratories are equipped with the latest technology. Moreover, there are some laboratories for research in specific areas such as Aquatic Life, Genetics, Molecular Genetics and Biotechnology. Lectures and laboratory work are the primary methods of teaching and assessment is generally by examinations, coursework and fieldwork.

Admission Requirements
In order to be considered for this program, secondary education or an equivalent overseas program has to be completed and for national applicants, enough points should be achieved on the national university entrance exam, score type MF-2.

Graduation Requirements
To graduate from the Department of Biology, at least 143 domestic (240 ECTS) credits must be attained and overall academic grade average of at least 2.00 must be achieved.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Graduates of Biology may apply to the following main fields of work or employment; Research; Biologists might join a research team in a university, research institutes, research and development departments in private and public sector or pharmaceutical company, using their scientific skills and practical ability, besides some councils such as agricultural, medical and natural environmental and etc. Another largest area of employment for biologists is industry such as pharmaceutical, food, and brewing, offers a wide variety of work from laboratory based research for those with intellectual and practical scientific talents, to sales, marketing, purchasing and production for those who have a commercial and managerial affair. About half of the biology graduates who work for industry go into laboratory based jobs. Besides those, there are jobs in the laboratories of hospitals as scientists and technicians. Education is one of the major areas of employment again covering the spectrum of academic ability. A biology degree provides an ideal basis for entering the teaching profession. In terms of numbers, most biologists that follow an educational career enter secondary school teaching, for which the best route is via a degree course and post-graduate certificate in education. On the other hand, at the upper end of the academic spectrum, there are positions in Universities as lecturers.
Assessment and Grading
The evaluation and assessment methods for each course prepared by the faculty member(s) and the relevant information are included in the package called "Course Teaching Plan". Exams and grades/success evaluations of courses are applied according to the H. U. Bachelor's Degree Education and Examination Regulations.
