About Programme

The Department of Mechanical Engineering admitted its first cohort of undergraduate students in the 2018–2019 academic year. The current annual admission quota for the program is 77 students. The medium of instruction is English, and students are required to demonstrate proficiency in English by passing a language examination before commencing their studies.
 
Graduates of the program are employed in leading companies in the defense, automotive, machinery, manufacturing, and energy sectors, and many continue their graduate studies at distinguished universities in Türkiye and abroad.
 
The Department currently employs 19 faculty members and maintains an active research profile. In addition to its undergraduate program, the Department offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in Mechanical Engineering. Research activities are primarily concentrated in the areas of solid mechanics and design, mechanisms and machine theory, automotive engineering, materials, control, mechatronics, sensors, thermal-fluids engineering, and energy.
 
The program is accredited by MUDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs) and has the EUR-ACE label.

History
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hacettepe University was established in 1992. In 2005, the Department launched Türkiye’s first undergraduate program in Automotive Engineering, which admitted its first cohort of students that same year. Graduate programs in Mechanical Engineering followed, with the Master of Science (M.S.) program beginning in Spring 2009 and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in Fall 2015.

In 2018, the Department discontinued new admissions to the Automotive Engineering undergraduate program. In the same academic year (2018–2019), the Department admitted the first cohort of students to its undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering.

Admission Requirements
Turkish Nationals need to obtain a sufficient score in the nationwide University Entrance Examination administered by OSYM. International student admissions and lateral student transfers are carried out according to the regulations set forth by the Student Affairs Office and University Senate.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the Department of Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program, students must:
1. Successfully complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits.
2. Successfully complete all compulsory courses listed in Section D.8 of the curriculum.
3. Successfully complete 51 ECTS credits of in-field (technical) elective courses. MMÜ 413 Thermal Engineering and Design OR MMÜ 312 Thermodynamics II must be taken to fulfill the thermal design requirement. 30 ECTS credits of in-field (technical) electives must come from MMÜ/OMÜ-coded in-field (technical) elective courses.
4. Successfully complete 9 ECTS credits of out-of-field (non-technical) elective courses.
5. Successfully complete Machine Shop Training (MMÜ 200).
6. Successfully complete two summer practices (MMÜ 301 and MMÜ 400), each with a duration of 20 business days.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Graduates can work in private sector, government, and continue to graduate level studies. The graduates mainly work in R&D, testing, product development, quality control, manufacturing, marketing, and sales departments of automotive, defense, machine and energy industries.
Assessment and Grading
The grading system of each course is included in the course information package. Examinations and grading system are determined by Hacettepe University Registrar's Office Regulations.
