History
The Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Letters offers a 4-year Undergraduate programme. The medium of instruction is English, excluding compulsory and elective courses students must take from other departments. All qualifying students are required to take an English Proficiency Test or demonstrate competence in English. Those who are successful begin their studies in the Department. Students who fail the proficiency test are required to complete the English Preparatory Programme of the School of Foreign Languages at Hacettepe University.The main objective of the Undergraduate Programme of the Department of English Language and Literature is to teach English literature and culture, train researchers, and promote research in this field.

Admission Requirements
Students are required to hold a valid high school diploma issued by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of National Education, or other international diplomas authorised by the Ministry of National Education to register for the Undergraduate Programme. Students should succeed in the Language 1 test of the National Student Selection and Placement Test.Entry requirements for the international students: International Students should comply with the requirements of the Regulations of Admission for the International Students of the Turkish Higher Educational Council, and the Criteria for Admitting International Students announced by Hacettepe University per academic year.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from Hacettepe University English Language and Literature Undergraduate Programme, students are required to comply with the HU Associate Degree, Undergraduate Degree Academic Education and Exam Regulations, article 30; complete at least 102 credits of the departmental compulsory courses including the common compulsory courses (93 credits of departmental compulsory courses - 9 credits of common compulsory courses); complete 26 credits (75 ECTS) of elective courses; accomplish the courses corresponding to 240 ECTS, and obtain at least 2.00 grade point average out of 4.00.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates of English Language and Literature with teaching certificates may become English teachers or lecturers in many state and private schools and universities. Graduates are also able to find jobs which require cultural and literary knowledge, such as those in tourism, ministries, banks, state and private media institutions. They can also work as translators, writers and/or editors. In addition to the positions in secondary schools and academic institutions, they may work at various state and private companies, and international offices and the European Union departments of the ministries.
