With the law enacted in 1933, an Institute of Revolutionary History was established within the Ministry of National Education with the aim of conducting research on the foundation of the Republic, the Turkish Revolution and Recent History, training researchers and academics in this field, and establishing a library and archive. On April 15, 1942, with the law numbered 4204, the task of researching and teaching the history of the revolution was given to the Institute of Turkish Revolutionary History, which was established under the Faculty of Language, History and Geography. In 1982, new institutes were established under the name of Atatürk's Principles and Revolutionary History Institute. Within this framework, based on the YÖK Law numbered 2547, the Atatürk Principles and Revolution History Institute was established within Hacettepe University with the Decree Law numbered 41 published in the Official Gazette dated July 20, 1982 and numbered 17760 regarding the Organization of Universities and with the Law numbered 2809 issued on March 28, 1983. Our institute was formed from two main branches, "Atatürk Principles" and "Revolution History", with the decision numbered 82/655 dated December 23, 1983 of the Council of Higher Education.
Later, in accordance with the decision taken by the Executive Board of the Council of Higher Education on April 12, 1988 (amended by law no. 2547, 7/d2), it was transformed into the Department of Atatürk's Principles and Revolution History. In this context, Hacettepe University Atatürk's Principles and Revolution History Institute, one of the seven existing institutes, continues its activities as a respected institution trying to fulfill the mission emphasized above in the best way possible. The graduate programs of our institute respond to the new and changing situations and current developments in our country, our environment and the world, contribute to the formation of social memory by presenting the scientific findings and information obtained to the service of the society, and provide students with the skills and competence to approach various issues of the history of the Republic of Turkey with modern methods within the framework of Turkish Modernization.
Our institute's postgraduate programs are designed in a broad and comprehensive manner to meet contemporary requirements, and by placing non-Western 'modernization' experiences in the context of modern Turkish and Turkish History with a holistic approach, they examine the interactions and reflections of the multi-dimensional characteristics and qualities of the National Struggle, the Atatürk Period and the Turkish Revolution with their immediate surroundings and the nations of the world using the methods of the Contemporary History discipline. Depending on the function of the science of history, this program aims to contribute to the understanding of today, the formation of future policies and decision-making processes in the context of Turkey and its ties and relations with its political and human geography. This program approaches various problems of Modern Turkish and Turkish History with scientific, multi-disciplinary, and interdisciplinary comparative methods. The language of education in our institute's postgraduate programs is Turkish. Our institute has the technical equipment and materials required by the educational process; it is developing within the framework of the general vision of our university.
